OUR JUNIOR SECTION

Here at YGC we take a very keen interest in the development and nurturing of our Juniors who, after all, are very much part of our future generation of golfers. Not only are we fortunate to have one of the most acclaimed courses in Yorkshire but our extensive practice facilities - comprising a driving range, swing studio, a short par 3 course and a practice chipping green - provide an excellent opportunity for improvement. We cater for all levels of Junior - whether you are just beginning to learn this great game or whether you are an accomplished single-figure handicap golfer.

We are rightly proud of our Juniors' achievements. In 2022 our Junior Team reached the final of the BCCS national golf competition, won the York Union (YU) Champion Junior Club and was runner up on the York Union Junior League.  The York Union Junior League matches are against eight other local golf clubs and are competitive but very friendly with a meal afterwards. These matches are a showcase for talented young golfers to progress into the York Union Junior Team which plays in the Yorkshire Inter-District Union of Golf Clubs Junior League. Former YGC Junior Team members include Julian Taylor, 2014 Yorkshire Amateur Champion, who competed on the PGA EuroPro Tour; Tom James, Assistant Professional at the Club; and Matt Dolling, Club champion in 2018.

Our simple mission statement is to:

Promote the game of golf in a safe, fun and friendly environment to enable every Junior to learn to enjoy the game and in so doing reach their full potential.

To achieve this we provide, at no additional cost:

  • Regular professional coaching sessions on most Thursday afternoons from April to October between 4.15 and 5.45 for level juniors.
  • WHS level juniors group sessions throughout the year on a weekend to maximise team performance and junior development.
  • Winter coaching sessions for juniors of all levels in the swing studio.
  • Mentoring and guidance on the course for those starting the game, to build up confidence in playing, etiquette, course management and scoring.
  • Regular Junior Stableford competitions with reserved tee times on a number of Sunday afternoons.
  • A full fixture list of competitive matches for WHS handicapped juniors against other teams in the York Union of Golf Clubs.
  • Fun competitive golf events for juniors yet to achieve a WHS Handicap Index.
  • A range of Club junior competitions and knockouts with trophies.
  • Encouragement to get out and play, where possible and appropriate utilising the support of adult members to share the enjoyment of watching our junior members flourish.
  • A supportive, safe and enjoyable environment where the wellbeing and safeguarding of all children is paramount.

Golf Sixes.  We now participate in the Golf Foundation Golf Sixes programme which offers competitive but fun team golf for those juniors new to the game and with no official handicap.  More detail is provided here .

The Junior section is split into three sections:

1. WHS Handicappers - the more experienced and competent Juniors who form the squad for competitive Junior matches.

2. The 'Blues' - those Juniors who are improving but are yet to achieve a WHS handicap and who have a local Club handicap from the Blue Tees on the main course.

3. ‘Pre Blues’ – those juniors new to the game who are learning the basic skills and are yet to achieve a Blues handicap.
